Covid-19 Protocols

Basic Health and Safety Protocols

  1. The following document provides a basic overview of the protocols initiated to maintain the health and safety of all worshipers as much as possible while preserving the integrity of the WORD and Sacrament Ministry.
  1. Throughout the service participants will be appropriately instructed and safely guided in order to safely facilitate a meaningful worship experience.


General Preparation of Facilities for Re-opening

  • Initial deep cleaning of entire sanctuary has been conducted in preparation of resuming corporate worship.
  • Cross ventilation will be achieved with the opening of the Sanctuary windows and doors while the facilities are occupied.
  • Clear and visible signage to wear masks and 6 ft. physical distancing markers are strategically placed throughout the facilities especially all entrances to the Sanctuary as well as outside egress.
  • Appropriate SFDPH approved signage has been posted stating:
    • That Covid-19 is transmitted through the air and that indoor settings carry a much higher risk of infection
    • That seniors and those with health risks should avoid indoor settings in crowds
    • The normal maximum capacity of the sanctuary space is approximately 300. The maximum capacity currently permitted under the Stay-Safer-At-Home Order is 75 persons.
  • Worshipers are encouraged to use the touchless hand sanitizers which have been installed at all major entry/exit points throughout the church facilities including the Church Sanctuary, Offices, Fellowship Hall and Music Room Facility entrance.
  • Disposable face masks will be available in the narthex for those who need them.
  • Collection plates will be centrally located at the Sanctuary entrances for easy access. During service times worshipers may place offerings in the offering plates. Only the designated ushers will handle the plates.
  • Ushers will monitor worship attendance and be responsible for limiting the number of attendees to 75.
  • Participants ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED from congregating before or after indoor religious services.


Before Worship on Entering the Church Facilities


  1. All ushers and elders assigned for the service must arrive no later than 30 minutes before the service to prepare, wearing gloves and masks.
  2. Access to the Church facilities will be limited to the main (Sloat Blvd.) entrance
  3. Following the Service all sanctuary exits shall be made available: front entrance, side porch gate (double doors).
  4. Upon arrival each worshiper shall be greeted at the front Portico and asked the pre-screening questions listed below by an Elder or appointed Usher.
  5. If a person answers “yes” to any question they shall be requested to return home. Under no circumstances will any person answering “yes” be admitted to worship.
  6. The names of all worshipers will be checked with a printed membership list and if a visitor, they will be asked to fill out a registration card. As per CDC/SF-City guidelines all Pre-Screening Attendance Records will be retained for three weeks and then destroyed.
  7. All worshipers MUST wear a mask and use hand sanitizer before entering the Sanctuary and while on church and school property.
  8. These Protocols and the following questions must be provided to all congregational members and posted at each church entrance.
  9. Health and wellness checks of those entering church will be completed and attendees will sign in prior to entering the sanctuary.
  10. Before, during or after worship social activities such as handshaking or clusters of people gathering together is strongly discouraged.


MANDATORY COVID-19 Pre-Screening Questions

To protect all those using our church facilities we ask that you answer the following questions before attending an in-person gathering:

  1. Are you currently experiencing a cough, fever (>99.4), chills, sore throat, muscle pain, loss of smell or taste, vomiting or shortness of breath?
  2. Are you currently caring for someone who is ill?
  3. During the last two weeks, have you been diagnosed with COVID-19?
  4. During the last two weeks, have you had contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 or suspected to have COVID-19?
  5. During the last two weeks, have you lived in or visited a place where COVID-19 is spreading?
  6. Do you consider yourself high-risk, unable to follow the in-person meeting precautions, or otherwise feel uncomfortable with attending an in-person gathering?


If you answered “yes” to any question, we ask that you stay home in order to protect your health and the health of all those in our community. Thank you!


Usher Duties for the “New Normal” Services

  • Areas of sanctuary pews will be blocked off from seating so as to stagger families and individuals achieving proper social distancing protocols.
  • Ushers will arrive at least 30 minutes early to greet the worshipers and conduct COVID Screening
  • Ushers will manage the entrance and exit flow of worshippers as much as possible in order to facilitate safe distancing.
  • Participants ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED from congregating before or after indoor religious services.
  • Ushers should be familiar with the location of masks and hand sanitizers within the Narthex and Sanctuary entrances.
  • Ushers will wear masks and gloves.
  • Ushers will offer masks and hand sanitizer to all worshipers.
  • Worship bulletins will be offered or placed on a central table at the entrance.
  • Ushers will assist as needed in seating worshipers in marked areas within the sanctuary.
  • Offering plates will be placed in easy visible locations within the sanctuary: center aisle and at the church office porch double doors.
  • Following the last service Ushers will secure the church building as normal including the downstairs doors and windows.

Sanctuary Seating

  • Access to the Church facilities will be limited to the main (Sloat Blvd Entrance)
  • Following the Service the front entrance and the side porch gate (double doors) shall be made available for exiting.
  • Prior to worship and at the conclusion of the Service, an usher will be at each one of the exit doors at a safe distance to assist in maintaining health and safety protocols.
  • Available sanctuary seating is clearly indicated in order to maintain safe distance between worshipers.
  • While family members are welcome to sit together, individual worshipers must practice safe distancing and may not sit in close proximity to others.


Service of Holy Communion

  • Singing, chanting and shouting are not permitted during the service.
  • Ushers will monitor the communion flow to insure proper social distancing.
  • Communion will be continuous flow at the transept (bottom of stairs), no public common cup.
  • Pastors (and Elder) will wear masks and sanitize their hands prior to putting on gloves for distribution.
  • Elder will assist with trays as needed.
  • Altar will be prepared as normal with new communion ware.
  • Disposable cups will be spaced out in the tray every other space.
  • Trays (or baskets) will be covered in plastic wrap and placed on either side as we do at Easter to respectfully receive used plastic disposable cups.
  • During communion the Ushers will monitor and guide communicant members to the Pastors at the Chancel Steps.
  • Each communicant should be spaced out every three pews.
  • Pastors will be spaced apart at least 6ft on the main floor.
  • To limit the handling of the congregational hosts (wafers), all hosts will remain in and dispensed from the ciborium.
  • Celebrant will complete the consecration at the Altar.
  • Celebrant with Ciborium containing the wafers and assisting Pastor with the tray of wine will commune the congregation on the main floor at the chancel steps.
  • After communing, church members will place the disposable cups on a tray near the front pew and these will be disposed of after worship.

Note: Services will be recorded and made available via the WPL Church Website for those unable to attend public worship. The camera will be redirected or turned off during communion so that no congregants will be recorded during communion.


Fellowship Gatherings Temporarily Discontinued

  • Coffee/Fellowship times before or after worship or during Bible Class are temporarily suspended.


Children’s Sunday School and Adult Bible Studies

  • Sunday Adult Bible Study and Children’s Sunday School are temporarily suspended.
  • Wednesday Morning Adult Bible Study will continue on Zoom at 11:00 a.m.
